Hey everybody! Sorry the updates are two weeks late,
but last week was a very busy week for me. Not only did I have to travel 125 miles to go
to an eye appointment, but my eldest son got married on Friday! It was a beautiful
ceremony, and I am so happy for him and his new wife! 'Sigh', all my children are now
married. Time moves so fast these days...
As far as updates are concerned, in
When Foxes Fly , Ping gives Duelsey a stern alternative. In
Lost Legends of Whoelterran , Valor and Co. are in real trouble now!
In From RoughWood With Love , seems economic problems are everywhere.

Wow! I can hardly believe the Holidays are upon us
again! Now that I'm an old man, time goes roaring past faster and faster.
Yay! We put up our Christmas tree, and it is so
pretty. When I was little, I used to look forward all year to decorating it. Yeah,
some folks may sneer at the tradition of putting up a tree during the Holidays
(saying that it was actually a pagan ritual), but they are only focusing on a portion
of the history of the Christmas tree. You see, Saint Boniface was sent to convert
the German tribes in 719 AD. There, they indeed had a pagan ritual of decorating an
evergreen tree. Boniface's first new converts came to him and were ready to do away
with the ritual completely. He surprised them instead, and told them that the fir
tree pointed toward the Christ Child in Heaven. He went on to say that they should
go ahead and bring it into their homes, then decorate it as a Christmas tree. He
knew that their neighbors would be curious as to why they were still decorating a
tree and the explanation would produce even more converts. Thus, I know the Christmas
tree to be a tool used to convert Germany to Christianity, and that is how I will
remember it.
Well, we got updates! In When Foxes Fly , looks like Rusty's bodyguards have a new member! In Lost Legends of Whoelterran . The fight continues against the bone grabbers
and webbers!

Thanksgiving is upon us again, and here in the
Sparkle Forests I reflect on all that I have to be thankful for. I thank God for a
wonderful family that looks after me on my bad days. I thank God for the fact that
I haven't been completely bedridden for several years now. I thank God for providing
the food on our table, the clean water we drink, and the roofs over our heads. I
thank God for the clothes which we wear and the air that we breathe. I also thank
God for the modest but loyal following my comics have. Have a great Thanksgiving
folks, and don't be too shy to visit my Chat boxes in the left margin of my comics'
front pages. I love hearing from you.

Hey everybody! Well, what a week! Did my civic
duty and gladly voted on Tuesday. So now we will have a new President next year. I
respect this man, and he has my prayers. I pray that he will be a godly leader. I
pray that The Lord give him strength in mind and body to tackle the enormous problems
that our country has. Further, I pray that The Lord of Heaven send Guardians to
protect him. There are dark forces who would seek to destroy the symbol that he has
become. Finally, I pray The Lord guide him to live in a manner that honors the office
which he has been placed in. I pray all this in Christ's Name, Amen!
Got a couple of updates today. In
When Foxes Fly , finally, you find out what Tzgitattle's so called sacred brew
is! And in Lost Legends of Whoelterran , Valor shows off one of the things he was working
on in his satchel lab!

Hey, everybody! Looks like we're well into fall,
with the wind whipping over the trees of the forests. The sky has the clear cerulean
blue of autumn and the air has a nice crisp feel. The Harvest is upon us.
Well, the update in
Lost Legends of Whoelterran is up, and all new types of undead jump through the
doorway! There's a lot you can do with skeleton monsters. They're getting smarter
too. The closer you get to the boss, the worse the monsters become.

Brrr! It's gotten kind of chilly here in the
Sparkle Forests! Sadly, we don't usually get any snow around these parts until
January or February. The folks in the mountains nearby have already gotten a beautiful
little blanket of the white stuff, but none of it reached us. 'Sigh', having spent a
good portion of my childhood in cool climates, I miss the white Christmases of my
youth. In any event, the leaves are turning, so I'll enjoy the colorful season we have
right now. Tis a strange and mysterious climate here in the Sparkle Forests. Even my
dwarf rose bush is still in bloom.

What a couple of weeks
I've had! I know each of my comic's updates were a few days late and I apologize.
The Doctor's appointments (and needles coming my way) set my work a little behind.
Yeah, yesterday I got my flu shot, so I should be good to go for awhile.
Through it all, I did get an update prepared.

Well, the leaves are turning, and the wind doth
blow. Fall has come to the Sparkle Forests. I love this time of year. No, believe
it or not, I'm not one to celebrate All Hallow's Eve. Even though I like the
occasional scary story where an incredible evil is defeated, Halloween has become too
much of a celebration of such darkness for my taste. Time was, when you could consider
it a time of spoofing the enemy, but now I just see too many of us embracing the evil.
I'll celebrate the time of harvest, but I ignore Halloween.
Sorry it's coming late, but the update for
When Foxes Fly is here! Yeah, Blue Leader gets the bad news about Duelsey.
How will Abomba Nation react to this set back?

Well, here in the States it's Columbus Day! A man
in the 1400's tries to find a western route to India, and discovers a whole new world.
Personally, I'm very glad he did. Being a mixture of Irish, French, English, and two
Native American tribes, if Columbus hadn't discovered America, I probably wouldn't exist. Happy Columbus Day!
Two updates today, y'all! In
Lost Legends of Whoelterran we cut back to Drommen where something stirs in the
darkness... again! In From RoughWood With Love we give an example of cyclic debates.

Well, it's been quite a weekend for me. Went to see
my baby Granddaughter and hold her for awhile. She is precious!
I was a little worried for my younger son. He had to
go to another state to help a store that is opening up there. That place is really hit
hard by the gas shortage. Hopefully he can get enough for the drive back home.

Hey, everybody!
Couldn't
resist putting another picture of my Granddaughter up. She's so pretty!
Well, normally I work a week ahead of time, so that
the vote incentives will be a full color preview. Next week's page of
Lost Legends of Whoelterran is taking longer than usual however, so the incentives
have to be black and white. On the other hand, they are indeed previews. So the
update today is in Lost Legends of Whoelterran where we hear some key points about the kobold's plans
in the Deep Horror. They got nerve, you gotta give 'em that!

Hey, everybody!
As far
as updates go, in When Foxes Fly Rusty continues to praise and worship with amazing results.
In Lost Legends of Whoelterran , we witness kobold discipline. And in
From RoughWood With Love we find a cure for the boring day!
Well, nifty nifty, RG is fifty! That's right,
folks! Yours Truly, The Hermit of The Sparkle Forests has walked the face of the
earth for half a century! My wife was pretty amused when I turned to her yesterday,
and said, "I DON'T KNOW HOW TO BE FIFTY!!". I mean, I still like cartoons, reading
and drawing comics, hearing and telling stories, playing video games... all the
stuff my parents said I would have to grow out of. 'Sigh', I suppose by their
standards back then, I never grew up. I must face the fact that at first glance,
I don't appear very successful. In my arrogance, I turned down contacts leading
to Disney, (long ago when Disney was looking for new talent) and spent about
twenty years busting my rear to feed my family. No regrets about that, but I
probably would have preferred supporting my family by working for Disney. On the
other hand, if my first job out of college had been with Disney, I would never
have learned how to pull dignity out of doing a job which most folks consider to
be totally unskilled, (do you want fries with that?) . I would never have learned
how to pull dignity out of cleaning toilets and mopping floors for a living. If
my first job had been with Disney, I doubt that I would be a veteran now. Though,
I have tried to be a simple man, I find myself becoming more and more
complicated. Though I appear to be unsuccessful, my efforts have helped my wife
raise three wonderful kids who are now grown and on their own. I'm even supposed
to be a grandfather this month. Yes, this crazy little unknown hermit hiding out
in the Sparkle Forests has been pretty successful after all.

Hey, everybody!
Well, I was
glad to see some of the fencing events aired at the Olympics, as well as some
incredible feats done by the athletes.
How 'bout that Mr.
Phelps? (I think he's really a dolphin in disguise) Now, if they'll just air the
Judo and Taekwondo events...
My wife's been happy because she loves to watch
the gymnastics. I must admit that is a fascinating sport, whether one is watching
the men or women. I have trouble comprehending how they can get their bodies to do
all that. I mean, I know it's a combination of determination, practice and
training, but it is still such a mystery to me. I guess that's where 'talent'
comes in. Yes, talent is definitely a treasure held by every participant in the
Olympiad. We cheer for them, as they all are winners by even making it to the games. Whether they obtain a medal or not, they enrich all of our lives with their competition. I'm a fan of them all.
As far as updates go, in
Lost Legends of Whoelterran , Valor and Norry continue their debate about
things of faith. In When Foxes Fly , the five minutes have passed and Duelsey's
powers are back. But where's Rusty?

August 11, 2008
Hey everybody!
Well, I
been watching the Olympics and I just love it. I do have a little complaint about
the coverage though. Don't get me wrong, the diving, swimming and gymnastics are
great, but I like other events which hardly ever get aired. I'm talking the
archery, taekwondo, and judo events (among others). I like the fencing, shooting,
and throwing events as well. Why don't they ever get aired? I long for the kind
of coverage they had back in the days of the "Wide World of Sports" telecasts!
Back then they would cover just the action of the actual event and then cut to the
action of another event. That way, they had time to show a wide variety of
athletics and we wouldn't be watching ten minutes of warm up before seeing five
minutes of action! Give me more variety, and less stretching exercises! Or, if
I want to just hear a reporter yak, I could listen to the radio.
As far as updates go, In
Lost Legends
of Whoelterran , Valor reveals his doubts about deities of any kind.
In When Foxes Fly , Duelsey carries the fight
all the way down to the street! Literally!

When Foxes Fly and
Lost Legends

between 200 and 300 in the general rankings, but (as of this morning), both are in
the top 100 of their own genres! Matter of fact, while
Lost Legends

WHEN FOXES
FLY IS #12 IN THE ANTHROS!! That's right! When Foxes Fly is almost in the
top ten anthro comics at

Speaking of updates, in
When Foxes
Fly , Duelsey suffers the retaliation of the Abomba Nation agent as her fight

has when it's the only light at night. But is someone missing?

In Lost Legends of Whoelterran , we have more about
goblin and kobold diplomacy! Could those kobolds be cooking up something? Oh,
and there is such a word as 'dastard'! It's not a typo, LOL! It means a
wicked, cowardly sneak! What did you think I meant?!

Whew!
We made it to the
first Monday in July. Hope everyone had a great Independence Day! We spent ours
close to home 'cause gas prices are so high! I flew the flag and we watched the
fireworks on the television. Sure, it may not have been exciting, but it was
relaxing. Happy Birthday America.
As far as updates go, in Lost Legends of Whoelterran ,
we introduce kobolds for the first time. Yeah, I wanted an original design for the
denizens of Impbite and the least powerful inhabitants of the Deep Dark, but from
what I've read of the old legends, and my own background stories of the synthebrids
of Whoelterran, this image of kobolds seems appropriate. (I also wanted to steer
away from the old AD&D design) They may be small, but don't sell them kobolds
short ('snort'), they are clever and can cause great mischief!
In When Foxes Fly , Duelsey makes her move. Her heart
isn't in her treachery however, and she changes her mind at the last second. But
has she turned over a new leaf way too late?
In
From Rough Wood With Love , this was drawn when Disney's "Tarzan of the Apes"
came out in video. Yeah, I kinda liked that movie.

And so, the hot month of June comes to a close.
As it does so, we greet the new month of July. July brings with it great days of
patriotism for both the States and Canada. Canada Day is on Tuesday and the Fourth
of July is on Friday. Hopefully we'll get a bit more rain here in The Sparkle
Forests so that our fireworks won't be so dangerous.
As far as updates go, in Lost Legends of
Whoelterran , Tinker's Curse elaborates a bit more about 'DHEM'. I think I did
pretty well on the last panel where he and the goblin General peer into the opening
of the kobold tunnel.
In When Foxes Fly , Tzgitattles and Obtuse finally
meet Bonny. Now, she smells the so called sacred potion. How could she
recognize that aroma?
In
From Rough Wood With Love , we have a little comic reminiscent of when the
only heat my family had in the house was a wood burner. Well, I discovered the
dangers of alternative fuels.

Well, I had a great Father's Day, (even though I
had to get a shot) and got to see all my kids (they've grown up, y'know). I love my
family!
In the update of Lost Legends of Whoelterran ,
Allspice and Valoria travel further into the Deep Dark. Just a little more info for
you lucky readers; The Vile Nexus is under Brineyland, so the Goblins have taken
Allspice and Valoria many miles underground. This means they are no longer under
the Sparkle Forests and have left Valor and Co. far behind. Will he, Zan, and Norry
ever catch up?
Have patience, dear reader...
As far as the update of When Foxes Fly is concerned,
Filbert and Co. are finally facing Ping Pong themselves. Will Tzgitattles ever be
able to give her the potion, or is there another way to subdue the monster?
Stay tuned...
Okay, the update on
From Rough Wood With Love is kind of dated (as usual) since I drew them a while

Hey, everybody! Here in the states, "Flag Day"
is this weekend! Let the banner fly!
Father's Day is Sunday, as well! Remember to
honor dear old Dad!
Well, some of you may have noticed I've removed
the "WebComics Super 100 List" from my vote buttons. Naw, I didn't succumb to the
harassment I received from hecklers who got angry when my comics bumped one of their
friends off the top ten there. Matter of fact, I stubbornly stayed there through
all that because I wasn't going to let them take away my privilege to be on that
list like any other WebComics creator. I still find it ironic that they trashed the
ratings of "When Foxes Fly", (making it the lowest rated comic on the list) and the
votes of my readers kept it in the top ten continually. Certain events in the past
couple of months however, have made me suspicious of the list itself. For one
thing, whenever they reset the list, my votes drop back to zero while others will
get at least one vote that very day. Since they update the next day, everyone
should be at zero that first day. Either a few have been informed of something I
haven't, or the administration manipulates the list more than they let on. In any
event, I stayed with the Super 100 List, because within two days, my readers would
have me back up to number 2 and 3 anyway. the past couple of days however, have
heightened my suspicions. Two days ago they reset again, but this time my votes
stayed at zero both days. At least one vote should have registered, (mine). For
this reason I have sent them a message to cancel my accounts. I would rather my
readers direct thier votes to a list where I'm more certain they'll be registered.
So for now, I'd like to request all your votes to go to TopWeb and Buzzcomics.
The buttons are in the left margin, y'all.

Hey everybody!
Hope you've
had a great Memorial Day weekend!
My wife and I went to a new Church last Sunday.
We're trying to find a new Church home since our last one closed its doors. The
Church we visited was great, but we want to see at least one more before we make up
our mind. A Christian's church home is very important to them and should be chosen
wisely. For all the folks who mean well, Church people can hurt you like no
others.
If you want to escape this fact, I don't know if
you'll ever find a Church home. Therefore, we have to rely on God's Guidance to
find the place of Worship where we can do the most good. You see, among all the
deeds of men and women are many mistakes. God always deals with our hearts. To
find a Church home, we must examine the Church's heart.

Hey, everybody! This Saturday we're celebrating
Armed Forces Day, here in the states! Let's take the opportunity to remember the
folks who keep watch so that we can enjoy our peace.
Well, it's been quite an eventful week. My
mother went into the hospital last week with an infection in her side. It scared
us a bit because the doctor said if it didn't shrink down, they might have to
operate. Thankfully, it did and she went home today. Praise The Lord.
If any of you have gone to my MySpace or DA
page, I apologize for not having been there for ages. The problem is my dial up
connection. A few months back, those sites went through some modifications and
now it takes forever for their pages to load up. With things as they are, I just
don't have time for that kind of stuff. I am thinking about starting a LiveJournal,
but for the time being, email is the best way to talk to me. That, or

Seems like natural disasters are occurring all
over the earth here lately. Course, when you try to look at the statistics of this
topic, you can come up with any number of conclusions, (depending on who you ask).
It's as if a number of organizations are trying to resist any hint that an increase
in natural disasters may have a prophetic link to Christ's return. Hence, you have
some folks saying there is a definite increase in natural disaster and others who
are calling those findings ridiculous. I find it interesting that some of these
liberal sources balk at the very idea of natural disasters occurring prophetically
before The Lord's return, but can embrace wholeheartedly natural disasters brought
about by the emissions of automobiles and the burning of fossil fuels. You can't
have it both ways, folks. If you say natural disasters aren't increasing, (because
you don't want it to be prophetic) you can't turn around and say they are increasing
because of global warming. You're contradicting yourself, anyway you look at it!
Personally, I say where there's smoke, there's fire. The sheer buzz about it going
on, tells me that people are noticing a change in the frequency of disasters. The
more I see, the more I believe we are in the last days. Christ is coming folks,
and I believe He's coming soon.

Well, April comes to a close and the summer
finally makes its appearance! I'm feeling much better, just in time for everything
to turn green in the forests. My roses have got buds and my azalea is in bloom.
Everything is waking up!
My daughter and son in law have moved into a
wonderful house in town. It's really nice and I'm so happy for them. Did I mention
that I'm gonna be a grandpa later this year? Yes, my daughter is expecting and the
due date is right on my birthday! Now, how about that?
All the forums are still down but one. My bad
cold last week slowed everything down but hopefully I can get caught up.

Hey everybody!
Well, the
climatic roller coaster continues here in the Sparkle Forests, and we have a little
cold snap going on now. I think it's just the chill of the spring rains however,
and the warm weather will be back soon.
Some of you may have noticed that I've taken
down all my forums but one. Sorry 'bout that, but some folks were trying to Spam me
with one of their 'bots.
I really wanted a forum where folks
didn't have to register to use, but some spammers were trying to take advantage
of that. After having to make 40 deletions a day to one topic, I decided I needed
to start all over. I still want to have a register free forum, (like RG's Soapbox
Forum, which is still up) but I want to keep the Spam out too. I'll let you know
when the forums are all back up. Oh! Anyone know any good forum hosts for free?
I had a reader who was confused about the
Menorah which appeared in Chapter 3, (pages 4 and 5) of Lost Legends of Whoelterran .
They wanted to know if "Lost Legends" was really a Christian comic, (because the
Menorah is generally thought of as a Jewish symbol). Well, Lost Legends is indeed
a Christian comic and you may very well see a lot of Judaic symbols in it. Why?
Because true Christians serve a Jewish God! A God who is the same yesterday, today,
and forever!

Hey everybody!
We survived
April Fool's Day, and now look to the rest of the month with a new spring to enjoy.
Still a lot of rain, but the flowers have started blooming. Comforting to see the
splashes of color in the midst of all the gloom.
Well, I got my B12 shot yesterday, and I do seem
to feel a little better today. Sure is a relief to have that over with this month.
RG don't like needles.
Wonder why Easter didn't coincide with Passover
this year? You know, The Lord's death and Resurrection occurred around the time of
Passover, so why are they three weeks apart now? I suppose it's more of the pagan
Roman influences of the season infringing on the Holiday. Such a shame...
Planting time is upon us in the Sparkle
Forests. Our neighbors have been tilling soil, and show the promise of some pretty
little gardens. Yes, in some places it resembles The Shire around here. It feels
like home.

And so comes the time to turn the page on March
2008.
It's been a very eventful month, but I look to April with
great anticipation. (uh oh, tomorrow's April Fools Day).
Anyway, a few days back, I saw an ad for a new
tee shirt design that got me thinking, (dangerous for those around me) and I decided
to rant about it. The funny thing is that the shirt didn't steer my thoughts in the
direction which the designer intended. It's the latest answer nonbelievers have
come up with, for the WWJD?, (What Would Jesus D
o?) design. The shirt has a big WWUD?, and then under it says (think for
yourself). You know, this may seem clever at first but if you know something about
the decision making process, it completely misses the mark. When we, so call, think
for ourselves, we have to consider not only our options, but our priorities as
well. Like it or not, our priorities and values are based for a large part on the
influences of those around us. I know that as a youth when I turned from the values
my parents taught me, (and decided to 'think for myself') I was actually being
manipulated by peer pressure. I was simply using a different value system to make
my decisions. I know now, that the advice given to me was flawed and filled my life
with a lot of mischief. Like it or not, everyone who prides themselves on 'thinking
for themselves' still use templates and suggestions in their decision making
process. They still consider the advice or example of others, be it peer pressure,
mentors, or prominent people who've gone before us. When we consider what Jesus
would do, we actually are thinking for ourselves! Further, we are using the
Greatest example available in our decision making process!

Hi everybody!
Hope your
Easter was fantastic! I've had a pretty good weekend, but the dizzy spells came
back for a few days.
If they were just a little light-
headedness, that wouldn't be so bad, (I'm used to that) but it hits me all at once
and for about 3 to 5 seconds I feel like I'm in free fall. Just another MS
aggravation.
You may have noticed that I've put up some ad
boxes at the top of the page. Project Wonderful is my favorite ad exchange because they let
me choose what ads I'll accept or reject before they get to my site. That means
I'll only accept ads which I feel are proper for a Christian site to be affiliated
with. Yet, I'm not above making mistakes though, so if you find an ad is to an
objectionable site, let me know and I'll give it a second look. Mature and graphic
sites aren't the only ones on my reject list. If a site is particularly mean
spirited and nasty to others, I may very well reject them also. I feel no
obligation to send viewers to troll and flame sites.

Hey everybody! Hope y'all had a Happy Saint
Patrick's day!
Saint Patrick was born somewhere around 389 AD,
in Western Britain. He was the son of a Christian deacon, but at the age of
sixteen, Patrick was kidnapped by Irish raiders. The unfortunate youth found
himself enslaved and spent the next six years herding sheep in Ireland. He managed
to escape however, and landed in Gaul, (what we now call France) where he became a
monk. Patrick went on to become a deacon and finally a bishop.
About 419 AD, Patrick had a dream which called
upon him to convert the Irish. Thus, began his life as a missionary. Now, Patrick
wasn't the first missionary to Ireland, but he was certainly the most successful.
By all accounts, the man had incredible courage. Instead of tolerating the pagan
practices of the local druids, Patrick openly defied them. A turning point in Irish
history occurred when Patrick lit an Easter fire in Tara. It was on the day that
the first fire was supposed to be lit by the druid king. Instead of punishing
Patrick's insolence, the king was impressed by his faith and courage. The king
protected the bishop and his work from that day on.
Legends have been handed down as to the means
that Patrick used to convert the druids of Ireland. The best known was that the
Saint drove all the snakes out of Ireland, but the one that is dear to me is the way
he used the three leaves of the shamrock to explain the Trinity of God to the druid
king. You see each leaf of the shamrock is an individual leaf, but each leaf is
every bit as much of the one shamrock as the others. Our God is God The Father,
God The Son, and God The Holy Spirit. Each one as much a part of the One God as the
others. However it happened, Patrick gained the support of the king of Tara, and
ministered to the needs of the Christians already in Ireland. The Saint went on to
make many converts in Ulster, Connaught, and finally established his see in Armagh.
Yes, there's wonderful legends surrounding
Patrick, but the facts we have are equally impressive! In 33 years, he effectively
converted all of Ireland. His ties with the Church brought Ireland into closer
contact with Rome and acquainted the Irish with the culture of Western Europe. As a
result of Saint Patrick's work, the monasteries of Ireland were great storehouses of
knowledge during the Dark Ages. Further, throughout the Middle Ages, the country
was known as the Land of Saints.

Well, I think there's an old saying that goes,
"March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb." Heh, I don't think March
really came into the Sparkle Forests like a lion this year. Oh, we got a couple of
days of frost, but now we have spring weather again. If March is coming in like a
lamb, does that mean it'll go out like a lion?
I find myself in the center of the great art
debate time and time again. What I call the great art debate, is the struggle
between the viewpoint of contemporary artists, and that of the liberal arts. What
would an old man doing comics know of such things, you may ask. Well, because I've
been through both schools. If you don't believe I can paint then you need to look
at my older work in my DA Gallery . I'm not doing comics because I can't do fine
artwork y'all. Comics seem to combine a lot of different talents God has gifted me
with and I find them very fulfilling. In any event, I get annoyed at the great art
debate, because for me it shouldn't exist. The reason it does exist, is there are a
lot of folks who think they have an understanding of the arts when they really
don't. On one hand you have the very narrow minded opinion of a lot of contemporary
artists who think a piece is only art if it is realistic and looks like something
else. Then you have the other end of the spectrum with the liberal artists who
don't believe anyone can really define art, that art is in the eye of the beholder,
and anything framed or
put on a pedestal is art. It is my opinion, (the opinion of someone who trained in
both arts, has degrees in both arts, and who has studied art for many years) that
both extremes are completely wrong. If you follow the contemporary extreme, then
any poorly composed snapshot from an instamatic camera becomes a great work of art.
If you go by the liberal arts extreme, than any smearing or hoof print put on a
canvas by non comprehending zoo animals becomes a work of art. Yes, the great art
debate has produced a lot of money for folks who know very little about art, while
truly talented people never get noticed. My definition of art comes from actually
combining the theories of both schools. If you do that, you can set an
impressionistic painting beside an abstract, and decide which individual piece is a
better work of art. It is no longer a comparison of apples and oranges because all
art is empowered by certain basic characteristics. Balance, movement, composition,
and technique are the building blocks of any work of art. It is the excellence or
failure of these tools which decide whether a piece is a good work of art, or poor.

Well, I'm a little frustrated. Spent way too
much time looking for a free banner exchange only to find out there's a lot of them
no longer active. Total waste of my time. Hard to find good advertising on such

Finally cleaned up my DA page, (lotsa unread

Hey everybody! Hope your Valentine's Day was
fantastic. My poor wife's got a bad cold but she seems to be doing better. I'm
very thankful for that!
Great news from a couple of the comic listings!
At the
WebComics Super 100 List , Lost Legends of Whoelterran and
When Foxes
Fly were ranked # 2 and # 3 on February 14th! The only thing ranked
higher was the webcomic heavyweight Chicken Wings !
Chicken Wings
is a great comic, and well deserves the # 1 slot. Have to say it was an
honor to be ranked in the next two slots under such an established webcomic. Not
only that, but When Foxes Fly , and , Lost Legends of Whoelterran were also in the
top twenty at Webbed
Comics ! I thank the Good Lord for the opportunity to tell these stories in my

I just can't believe the weather here lately.
It's like winter is on hiatus in the Sparkle Forest. If I
were superstitious, I'd say the ground hog really didn't see his shadow, after all.
The temperature is like twenty degrees higher than normal.
Yet, I see on the news that folks in other parts of the
country are fighting through terrible blizzards. WHAT"S GOING ON!?
Well, the new comic,
From Rough Wood With Love is up and running. You may have noticed that I don't
have any vote buttons there. As yet there is a very small archive for that comic
and I'm going to wait until there's fifteen pieces done before I introduce it to the

And so begins February, the month of hearts, and
candy. It's also the month that I'm launching a comic which I started long ago just
for family and close friends. Everybody who saw it, told me it should be syndicated
but sadly the comic syndicates didn't agree. I could say that it's because they
didn't get the strange mixture of conservatism and earthiness. I could also say
it's because I showed that folks from the deep south aren't all beer drinking,
bigoted, trashy, lazy idiots shooting anything that moves like the stereotype says
we're supposed to be. Further, I could say that the big city syndicates didn't
understand why I didn't embrace that stereotype like
Snuffy Smith
,
Lil Abner , or Jeff Foxworthy has. I could say all that, but I think it's more
accurate to say that I didn't have an agent. In any event, and excluding the
syndicates,
From Rough Wood With Love is a good little comic which has brought
joy to all who have seen it so far, and I hope it gives you a laugh as well.

I must apologize for the fact that I've missed an
update this week. We've lost another dear one as my grandmother passed away. She
lived a long grand life, and was blessed as so few are, by being able to see her
great grandchildren before she passed on. She was a devoted Christian and I take
heart that her citizenship in The Kingdom of Heaven is assured.
Even though I've missed an update, I've been
considering a project that members of my family have said I should launch. I'm
inclined to agree, so the update this Friday may have a surprise, (God willing) .
The cycle of life is awesome and astonishing.
It fills me with such a wonderful bitter sweet feeling in these times. This week
I gave a tearful farewell to my grandmother, but I was also informed that I will be a
grandfather myself, this year. One stage of my journey ends, another begins. Yes, I
think I'm quite ready for another adventure.

Hey everybody! Snow finally made it to the
Sparkle Forests! Yeah, we almost never have a white Christmas, but by February we
usually get a little sprinkling. Only about an inch of snow this week, and of course
that's almost all gone now. It was beautiful while it lasted though.
Okay, Lost Legends of
Whoelterran may seem a little harsh this week,
but
considering the dangerous nature of the characters' situation, I don't see how I
couldn't make it a bit graphic. After all, that is the nature of fantasy adventure.
When it's scary, it's scary. On the other hand, this will probably be the most

Yay! It's the first update of 2008! Rather than
moan about the times past, I choose to look ahead in anticipation of the wonderful
year to come!
Well, a brisk wind came from the northwest, and
has made the Sparkle Forests a very chilly place. It's the kind of weather that
makes one thankful for a nice warm house. Now, I know some of you folks up north
figure it never gets cold around here, but when the low is in the teens, I say it's
cold! 'Course, we never seem to get any snow until January, but I've also seen snow
as late as March. Yeah, the weather can be weird, here in the Sparkle Forests. At
least the seasons change. When my family lived in Florida, we seemed to only have
one season all year.
Been playing some MMORPG games on line, and
discovered I like a few of them. I still have objections about the position magic
plays in some cases, but perhaps in the distant future I'll put together a game based
on Lost
Legends of Whoelterran . In any event, the ones I like to play are;
Runescape ,
Endless
Online , Pardus ,
and Fallen
Sword . The moderators of these sites seem to do their best to make these games
a safe environment, but remember that there are unsavory folks all over the web
trying to take advantage of the young and innocent, so be careful. Got a favorite
online MMORPG? Tell me about it!

And here we are with the last update of 2007.
It's been a good old year with plenty of innovations.
I've
learned the proper mix of PIXIA, GIMP, and PSP to make my colors and effects into
the eye candy they should be. Still haven't finished Episode 2 of
When Foxes
Fly , or Chapter 3 of Lost Legends of Whoelterran , but they should be wrapping up in
2008. Perhaps in 2008, I can get to where I can update twice a week. I hope so.
'Sigh'. Over the years, I've discovered the
need to turn the pages of my life and move forward. This can be difficult, but to
be honest, we really have no choice. Time moves ever forward, and it is the very
nature of our design to move with it. When you analyze it completely, time is
really just movement itself. Without movement, we die. There is no reverse, only
memories. As we move into the next year, let's make memories that we're proud of.
Just a little 2 cents from the Hermit of The
Sparkle Forests.

Yipes! It's the 21st already! Christmas is
coming this week and I am so excited! I'm celebrating in spite of the
grinchy buzz that Christmas is really a pagan holiday. First, the winter solstice
they refer to was not called Christmas! Second, the winter solstice comes on the
22nd, not the 25th. The Church may have made a lot of effort replacing that pagan
celebration with a Christian message, but that is only part of what goes on here.
You see, December 25th has a lot more significance to Christianity than most folks
realize. Now, there are a lot of things we can only speculate about the early
Church, but for some reason they chose the 25th of December to celebrate Christ
coming into the world. Let's face it, if they were only trying to replace the
celebration of the winter solstice, why not have it on the winter solstice? True,
most feel that Christ's time of birth was actually around the Feast of Tabernacles
in September, but we must remember that The Bible says that we are who we are before
our birth. Our identity begins when we are conceived. Therefore, The Word became
flesh when Mary conceived by the Holy Spirit nine months prior to Christ's birth.
Hence, The Word became flesh in December. That's why I think the early Church chose
December 25th and when I say Merry Christmas, I celebrate Emmanuel; God with us, and
saving us from our bondage in sin.

I'm, amazed at how mean spirited a lot of folks
on the 'net have been recently.
Oh, I've had to kick my way
through trolls before, but for the past week, I'm seeing a lot more folks getting
flamed for no reason.
The only explanation I have is that
perhaps a lot more school kids and college students have more time on the web due to
Holiday vacations. Now, I'm not saying every student is a troll, and perhaps it is
indeed all coincidence. One thing I will say though, is that trolling is
STUPID! Let's face it; trolling is a skill which takes the least amount of
talent to accomplish. It is infinitely easier to criticize and tear down, than to
compliment and build up. Even constructive criticism takes a bit more effort than
flaming. It's evident that a lot of trolls think they appear brilliant by sniping
on forums, insulting folks' blogs, and hurting people's feelings, but it all just
looks idiotic to me. These small minded individuals have even invaded the RPG
online games, to spoil the whole purpose of having an open chat system in those
areas, (y'know to make FRIENDS!) Oh well, it's been my experience that
people who try to make others unhappy, usually have a lot of sadness themselves.
Hopefully, this bunch will have a Scrooge experience and change their ways in time
to have a Merry Christmas.
I've been thinking about changing the design of
some of the items in The
Whoelterran Shop . The trucker's hat and black shirt in particular, since that
picture is a little out dated. Don't worry; I plan to announce the change a week
early, (since the old version will no longer be available).
I love this time of year!
Yeah, yours truly, the hermit of the Sparkle forests, feels
so very at home with the Christmas season. This week, our family continued a
Christmas tradition we started long ago. We attended a light show display which is
set up every December at Roper Mountain . Ever since I was a little hermit, I've
always enjoyed Christmas lights and I' m so glad we started that traditional trip.
Roper
Mountain always has such beautiful displays.

As I watch the news, it occurs to me that there
is some resentment in the international community about American involvement
throughout the world. Perhaps this is for good reason in some cases, but when you
examine America's past experience, it's not hard to understand why we are so
involved in the affairs of other countries. Oddly enough, years ago we had a very
isolationist point of view. We just wanted to mind our own business. At the
beginning of the 1940's, we were still debating whether we should have anything to
do with the explosive events going on across the oceans. Then, on this very day in
1941, the unthinkable happened. We were attacked, (while minding our own
business). Now, some speculate that if we had been more active in the overseas
wars, that the attack wouldn't have been so devastating. I don't know if we'll ever
know that for sure. One thing I am sure of is that as a nation we learned that
'minding our own business' did not keep us safe from war. The old saying "Don't go
looking for trouble, and no trouble will find you", just doesn't work in world
affairs. If you wonder why we Americans are so involved throughout the earth, it's
because we still remember Pearl Harbor, 1941

Now that November draws to a close, we (as
Christians) focus our attention on the celebration of the birth of our Savior.
Today however, is the first day of Hanukkah , and I feel this should be
an important event for Christians, as well as Jews. You see, Jesus Himself
attended The Feast of The Dedication, (John 10:22) and it was during this occasion,
that He announced who He is and the Truth about His unique relationship with The
Heavenly Father (John 10:30). That's what the Festival of Lights should be for
Christians. Christ lighting up our lives with Divine Illumination.

Hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving!
Yeah, ours was great! Some of my family had to work, (such is
the life in the retail and medical fields) but we still had a lot of relatives
around our table. That's something I am truly thankful for.
Well, here we are on what is commonly known in
American retail as Black Friday . No, I don't think it has something to do with
witchcraft! Actually, the retail folks call it
Black
Friday , 'cause all the after Thanksgiving sales are supposed to keep their
finances in the black instead of the red. Anyway, my wife and daughter are out
there somewhere in the shopping jungles of the Sparkle Forests having a wonderful
time. At least, I hope they are. It can get pretty wild out there.
So, once again we are in the Christmas season.
Each year amazes me at how fast it zips by. 'Course I've already bought my wife's
Christmas present, so at this point I'm ahead of the game.

Wow! It's Thanksgiving time already! Yeah, here
in the United States, this Thursday is set aside to give Thanks to The Good Lord for
all the Blessings of the year. This day is sometimes observed with religious
services, but always with a feast featuring roast turkey, cranberries, and mince,
pumpkin, or pecan pies.
There's more than one lesson to be
learned from this occasion, but one must examine the first Thanksgiving to realize
it. In the autumn of 1621, the pilgrims of Plymouth Colony held a festival to
celebrate the harvest. It was probably their version of the harvest festivals
celebrated in Europe, and is considered the origin of Thanksgiving Day. Of course,
the primary lesson of that Holiday was to be grateful for all that God has given us,
but I think there was a secondary lesson which is sadly overlooked. When the
colonists invited the Native American Chief Massasoit and his people to the feast,
they broke down the cultural barriers of their day. Two groups of people with
radically different ways of life, coming together in celebration. It's the way we
grow folks, and it's a beautiful thing. Happy Thanksgiving!

The cool weather has finally come to the Sparkle
Forests. The wind was really gusting Wednesday, and we even had an early morning
frost on Thursday! Yep, I had to wear my sweater this week 'cause it was so
chilly. I love the changing of the seasons.
There has been a great celestial event recently,
which I believe The Lord is using to teach me a very profound lesson. A comet,
17P/HOLMES , has recently become visible
in the northern sky. Most of the time, this comet is invisible to the naked eye.
Matter of fact, it existed in obscurity before 1892. No one would have known about
it, except for its sudden eruption and becoming as bright as the stars, (similar to
what it is doing now). Fitting encouragement for yours truly, the hermit of the
Sparkle Forests.

Well, I discovered some important points about a
new movie coming out and thought it would be helpful to share them with folks.
Watching some of the previews of
The Golden Compass fascinated me with wonderfully colorful
artwork and very professional cell animation. When I looked up info about Philip
Pullman however, (author of the book which the movie was based on) I found it rather
disturbing. I think The Snopes Report will give you the best presentation of what I
think would be the strongest objection I have to Pullman's work. If you want a
synopsis of the book The Golden Compass , just click on the
title in this sentence. Yes, I even had objections to the
Harry Potter series, but I think
The Golden Compass is even more dangerous. At Least JK Rowling,
(author of the Harry Potter books) didn't try to direct an assault on Christianity,
but it seems that is exactly what Pullman intends. No, I do not plan on seeing any
of his work, and to those who say I don't know what it's about until I actually read
it, I answer, "Where there's smoke, there's fire." I don't have to die in the
flames, to know the forest is burning.

Well, Halloween is before us,
and even though I refuse to celebrate the night before
"All Saints Day", I hope it is a safe night for those who do. Yeah, I used to trick
or treat when I was a kid, and my kids went trick or treating when they were little.
Back then, Christians could say it was like making fun of the enemy. Now however,
the occasion has taken a more serious and sinister nature.
I
suppose it would only be natural for some nonbelievers to say they preferred
Halloween over Christmas, (for example, the song sung by "The Addams Family on their
Halloween special a few years back) but I've seen this tendency become more and more
evident in recent years. Even "The Nightmare Before Christmas", illustrated a
Halloween assault on Christmas, and the power of Christmas was reduced to only giving
the appropriate gifts. Personally, I refuse to join in this revival of pagan ritual
which began with the druids of the ancient world, (who conducted human sacrifice, I
might add) and make my stand here. I would rather observe "All Saints Day", and the
fall harvest as a preparation for Thanksgiving Day. Besides, feasts are far more
appealing to me than a bag full of candy. Even having said that, I may jump at the
occasional shadow this Halloween, but my light will keep those shadows at
bay.

Yep, raining again, here in the Sparkle Forests.
Sadly, it'll have to rain a lot more to give us relief from our drought, but at
least it'll help bring the fall colors in.
Been a hard week for yours truly. Had a shot
Sunday, and another shot Wednesday. In the past, I've had a lot more than that, but
I've never really gotten used to injections.
'ICK' .
I've really enjoyed using PSP, GIMP, and PIXIA
for my comics, but I've noticed a lot of folks are using Photoshop. Think I'll
check that out next.
Tis a strange world we live in. I can't believe
that a school is seriously considering prescribing birth control pills for eleven
year olds without consulting the parents first. This means that a government
institution would be giving birth control to kids who are five years below the age
of consent! FIVE YEARS BELOW THE AGE OF CONSENT!
THAT'S
JUST SO WRONG!!

Gadzooks! I can't believe October is halfway
through!
Is the time-space continuum on fast forward or
something? Once again we're staring at the holiday season and I feel so
unprepared. Isn't there anyway to slow this bus down?
Well, the update is a day late 'cause I was at
the eye doctor yesterday. He put drops in my eyes, flashed bright lights in them,
and then put more drops in. After pressing a blue light into my corneas, and some
more bright white lights in my pupils, the folks there decided I was a good
candidate for laser surgery. After a few more visits, we'll know for sure.
Probably won't make me see better, but it'll help to keep the pressure down.
Glaucoma is nothing to play around with.

Been kinda rainy here in the Sparkle Forests. For
some it may seem a bit dismal, but I know if it stayed dry much longer, we wouldn't
have the bright colors of fall soon. When the trees aren't watered folks, the leaves
go directly to brown!
(sigh) My compy's been doing strange things.
It was slow and not acting right on the 'net, so I dumped
my cache and temp files. I also quick started my dial up software and all that
seemed to solve my problem. Today however, it's been trying to dial up the internet
by itself.
I think my internet provider slipped me some ads
which were trying to force me to visit. So, I clicked on those icons, visited the
sites, and turned them down. Now, everything seems to be normal. I don't mind
telling you that I get really annoyed by this type of sales technique.
When I'm basically forced to hear a pitch, I get more
determined than ever not to buy! Spam annoys me (not because it's there, all I have
to do is delete), but because someone thinks that force feeding my mailbox the same
ad over and over will make me interested in their product. What it does is set me
against their brand. The only thing I get from spam is a list of what not to
buy!
Our media here in the states cracks me up
sometimes.
A few networks have finally perceived that
there is a conservative audience out there and that group is far more vast than
they've realized in the past. It's also slowly dawning on them that most
conservatives are not the trailer park red necks, they stereotyped them to be in the
past. Intelligent people have chosen to be conservative from wise considerations.
And yet, it is so ironic when a seriously liberal network tries to cater to
conservatives while still promoting their liberal agenda. They set up talk programs
which start out as a healthy balance of conservative and liberal viewpoints. As
time goes on however, they can't resist stacking the deck against the conservative
spokespeople. Well, you know what conservatives do when they're insulted by a
program? They stop watching. You know what a liberal network does when a program
loses ratings? They make the program more liberal. We have a liberal media in this
country run by folks who are infatuated with what they consider their own
brilliance, and this is fueled by a new cult of celebrity worship. We weren't
supposed to have an aristocracy in this country, but it's here now. Sadly, our
lords and ladies are becoming more and more out of touch with the common people.

(groan), I think I've picked up a little cold
somewhere. It doesn't feel too severe though, of which I'm thankful.
So, the month of September winds down, and with
it goes the summer of 2007. The brisk winds of fall are already rushing through the
Sparkle Forests. I'm sure we'll have a short Indian summer, (we usually do) but
then the cool weather will kick in. Yet, only a few leaves have begun to turn
here. Yeah, I don't like seeing summer go, but I'm looking forward to the colorful
display our sweet gum and black walnut trees put on every autumn.

I'm no longer able to work on my van, we have some wonderful friends who fixed it

Now that my daughter is married, all my children
have moved out of the house. I remember Bill Cosby on his show always crackin' wise
'bout the kids finally leaving the house, and I suppose that's supposed to be the
father's point of view. As much as I try to simplify my life however, I must accept
the fact that I am a complicated person. My kids being gone, hurts. Don't get me
wrong, I love the fact that they've grown up and I have to say it is a very beautiful
thing. Their leaving is a natural and necessary stage of development. Yet, for me
it came all too soon. One moment I was changing diapers, (yes, I did lots of that)
burping and rocking babies to sleep. I just turned around a minute folks, and I'm
teaching kids to ride a bike and start school. I turn around again and I'm watching
them at dance recitals, little league, soccer, and scouting. I turn around again,
and I'm watching graduation commencements. I turn around again, and they've left my
house. It was all so short, folks! I really tried to make the most of every minute,
but I just couldn't slow the time down enough. Funny though, how I embrace this
bitter sweet feeling, as confusing as it is to me. I just thank the Good Lord for
that stage in my life. Being Papa rocks, people! Soon, when my feelings aren't so
raw, I'll look forward to the next stage of my journey. Writing does seem to make me

Yes, my daughter is getting married
on September 2nd, and leaving to live in the city. I'm very well acquainted with the
bitter sweet emotions of life, but I've always seemed to be the person doing the

scheduled blood test.
Being extremely phobic about the
needle involved, my day started rather traumatic. Those folks in the lab at the VA

as one might think.
Whenever I have to get blood drawn, I've
had to fast the night before. Since I skip breakfast, my wife treats me to a meal

right after my jab in the lab! Sort of my lollipop for being a good boy at the

My, oh my, how time does fly! And it's hot, y'all! I'm not

Man, have I been busy this week!
I've finally been able to get some JavaScript to work. It
made for a fancy new archives page in Lost Legends of Whoelterran !
If it
doesn't bog down my readers with dial up connections you may see more JavaScript
effects here and there. We'll see...
Speaking of Lost Legends of Whoelterran , those of you who've
been reading this month have noticed that I've finally gotten the four main
characters together, (after over a year of plot build up
) and I can concentrate on their relationships within the group. The storyline is
finally going in the direction I want.
It just goes to show
what I consider the strength and weakness of WebComics. It takes a long time to
tell a story, folks! Take what's happening in When Foxes Fly ! I originally intended it to be a spoof of
the newest "King Kong" movie. By now however, it's been so long since that movie
came out, I don't know if anybody is making the connection. Yeah, the time in
production is a weakness, but it has its strong points, as well. It gives me lots
of time to develop the story. By the time a page is posted, I've had a chance to
really apply some depth to the plot. It's amazing to me, how a weakness can be
turned into a strength!

Hey everybody!
Man! Is it
hot here in the Sparkle Forests, or what?
Yep! Summer is
raging, here in the Geographic Old South, but I keep on keeping on!
Ever wonder why bad things happen to good
people? Some people blame God and call such times crisis! Personally, I don't
think it is God's desire for anyone to suffer hard times! So why does He allow
Satan (our real enemy) to do so many bad things to us? Well, I think what most of
us call crisis are actually challenges! God allows these harsh times in our lives
because He expects us to rise to the occasion and show who we are! Victory is ours
when we are more than Conquerors, as Christ wants us to be!

Hey everybody! Wow! Friday the thirteenth came
and I didn't even realize it until it was late in the day!
I had no fear of it though, and before I knew it, the date had past.
Sadly, my update is a day late,
but here none the less. (sigh) I was just checking my
fave WebComics yesterday, and so many of them have gone like six months with no
update.
Some of them even longer! Kinda makes me sad
that the artists have lost interest in their work. I suppose I'll have to take them
off my faves, but I keep checking on them in the hopes that they'll start up again.
On the other hand, I've noticed some of the folks
I've traded links with, have ended their link exchange.
This
just doesn't seem fair to me, seeing that I've still kept their link on my sites.
Personally, I still do link exchanges and even if I get a ton of buttons, I'll just
devote an entire page to link exchange if I need to. Bear in mind, I am very picky
about who I will exchange links with, (I won't send anybody to a site which is
antichristian, glorifies witchcraft or satanism, or is too sexually oriented) but
however popular my comics get, I'll never consider myself too important to exchange
links. Just email me and I'll visit your site before I give you my reply.

Whew! I wasn't so sure I'd get this update done
on time.
Yeah, lost a day 'cause my compy got sick. One of
those pesky electronics problems. Funny, it had nothing to do with the hard drive,
RAM, or graphics card. It was the chassis fan! Now, I understand that some web
cartoonists have a colorist, web engineer, writer, and basically a staff to take
care of the many tasks it takes to get a WebComics on the net. As for myself
though, I do everything. I don't even have software specializing in HTML! All the
HTML files on this site was typed out on humble little notepad. That's why losing a
day can really put me behind! Thank The Good Lord that my son was nice enough to
pick up a new fan for me the same day!
Speaking of the same day, it was a wonderful 4th
of July!
My eldest son had a cookout at his house and
afterwards we all went to my house where my younger son brought a bunch of fire
works. They had some beautiful roman candles and rockets. Thanks guys!

I was watching CBN a few days ago, and was
surprised to learn of a recent poll which revealed that three times as many people
in America believe in the virgin birth of Christ, as believe in evolution. That may
surprise a lot of people, but one must realize that there are a lot of folks who
aren't Christian, but don't believe in evolution either. Even though they reject
what The Bible says about the creation, they also recognize that evolution is based
on "bad science"! Personally, I believe what The Bible says about the creation. If
you want me to elaborate on this, I've made a journal entry entitled,

of you folks still believe in evolution,
